EDITORIAL

Curtis C. Harris

Executive Editor

Carcinogenesis has concluded another successful year in service to the scientific community. The high quality and timeliness of the original articles and reviews that the journal published in 2006 is evidence of our success. In addition, we remain one of the few journals in the field of cancer research that does not apply page charges and that publishes accepted manuscripts online within one week on average (through the ‘Advance Access’ facility). Authors can also choose to publish their work under an optional ‘open access’ model (http://www.oxfordjournals.org/oxfordopen/). Research published in Carcinogenesis is now immediately available to more than 4500 institutions with online access, including more than 2000 institutions through the Developing Countries initiative of Oxford University Press.

Another highlight of 2006 was the biannual awards for scientific excellence that were presented at the Biannual Meeting of the European Association of Cancer Research in Budapest, July 1–4, 2006. Professor Ray Dubois, Anthony Dipple Carcinogenesis award winner, and Dr Manel Esteller, Young Investigator award winner, presented informative lectures on the topics of cancer prevention and epigenetic mechanisms in carcinogenesis.

I sincerely thank my colleagues, Chung S.Yang, Alan Clarke and Manuel Serrano for their service to the journal as Editors. The Editors handle more than 1000 submissions per year with the average time to a decision of 27 days and an acceptance rate of ~25%. Both Manuel and CS have been stellar Editors. They have completed their 3-year term and will be replaced by Takashi Takahashi and Thomas Kensler, who will be responsible for the Cancer Biology Section and Cancer Prevention Section, respectively.

We also thank the large number of referees, including the outstanding members of the Editorial Board, who have rapidly and critically reviewed the submitted reports. We welcome 16 new Editorial Board members who begin their 3-year terms in 2007:

Drs Bruno Amati, Mariano Barbacid, Sandy Chang, Lawrence Donehower, Raymond DuBois, David Hunter, Steve Jackson, David Lane, Gerd Pfeifer, Daniel Rosenberg, Varda Rotter, Manuel Serrano, Karen Vousden, Chris Wild, Chung S.Yang and Jun Yokota.

We also thank Editorial Board members who rotate off the board including Drs J.Carl Barrett, Maria Blasco, Antony Braithwaite, Robert Brown, Peter Demant, Zigang Dong, John Duncan Hayes, Stephen S.Hecht, James G.Herman, Setsuo Hirohashi, Moshe Oren, David H.Phillips and Paolo Vineis.

Finally, the Editors appreciate Penny Brown, who has taken over from Elizabeth Green, for the efficiency and care in running the Carcinogenesis Editorial Office, and the highly professional members of the Oxford Journals team, particularly Claire Bird and Verity Powell, for their continued support and advice.
